In-Laws Lesson 13

Building Relationships
Relationships are important, especially when it comes to family. They are eternal bonds that are built upon trust and devotion. When families work together they are laying the foundation for eternal relationships. Relationships are hard and take work but when people are willing to put forth effort then they can achieve goals and be better communicators. Often we find differences in relationships in the way we communicate, act and respond. In "Creating Healthy Ties With In-Laws and Extended Families" it says,
"Difference is something that can be anticipated and even looked forward to because of its potential for creating growth in family members. Prayer, fasting, and loving long-suffering are the best remedies when differences...bother us."
As we acknowledge and work through differences and trials together it can bring greater bonds in families and marriages. Being married is one of the hardest but most rewarding relationships. Not only are we working together as a couple to achieve but also we have extended families that can add to or take away from these cherished bonds.
Achieving Success in Extended Family Relationships
When we get married we are not only taking on a new husband or wife but also in-laws and extended family members. Often these can test the limits of relationships, but when you find balance then you can build those eternal bonds. In my own relationship with my mother in law we have had times that are great and some rough patches as well. She lives with us and so at times it works well and at times I need a break and some space. Usually the balance comes when she employed and working full time. I think that it not only gives us a break to be a family but it also relieves the stress of financial burdens as well. Lately, I have found it difficult but as I have prayed I know the Lord has helped me to be more patient.
Relationships are hard and like the phrase I used last week, "marriage is tough but I am tougher." I really do believe it and that when couples work together in all aspects then they are a greater force for good. We are all children of Heavenly Father and so as such we can look at our family relationships and see one another as he sees us.
